Surfers take on Byron Bay winter swell at the end of July 2022.
This freak swell pumped large waves from an unseasonal low-pressure system that formed off the east coast of Australia.
These types of low-pressure systems usually appear in late summer and Autumn, so surfers definitely enjoyed the great waves on offer.

The Byron area is packed full of top quality surfers. The reason you didn't see them is there's way better surf close by, why surf shitty waves with with the backpacker world when you can get shacked away from those clowns.
