Rusty Miller from Byron Bay is now 80 years old and still surfing most days.
Rusty is the true form of legend and has an amazing surf history starting in America, and later settling in Byron Bay NSW Australia.
I have known Rusty most of my life and he always said hello with a smile.
It’s an honour to capture this historical piece of footage!

Love you Rusty…You inspire me to surf till 100 mate.
If he was at Lowers some grom would still drop in on him even at 80.
legend
Actually wrote a song about him. Surfed Hanalei with him and Cabell in the 60's……… Magnificent friend, and incredible time of my life. E mau.
I'm struggling at 61
Go U good thing,I'm 60 in a week and this gives me inspiration to surf as long as I can stand.i remember back in the day rusty was on alote of those opera house surfing movies of the 70,s when I was a grommet and rode my new Bain superflex fibreglassed skateboard into the city .those were good days.
What a inspiration π
Thatβs excellent. And what a great wave also.
Perfect flow. The word "legend" is way, way overused, but Rusty's surfing life is at least something adjacent to it. I enjoyed a long conversation with Rusty and his wife, and was impressed by their progressive politics. Glad to see he's going strong.
Rusty Miller….1965 United States Surfing Champion and good friend. Aloha and keep pushing Rusty.
This is the dream for many of us on here! Please let me be like Rusty when I am 80!
Yeeeeew . Ruuuusty
I wonder if it maters if he's Rusty Miller or just anyone surfing at 80. We all just hope not to be harassed in the water by younger or more entitled people.
Trim…is all about the trim…
Rusty inspires me even more than Kelly Slater
I called Rusty and spent an afternoon with him to talk surf coaching with him once, probably 25 or 26 years ago.
What remains with me is not what we discussed, but his generous nature and being a quality human being.
May he surf to 180!
GO RUSTY GO!!!!!!!
Legend πββοΈ
Good to see this learner with a Leggy on π€£
Yoh, and it only took 80 years of hustling to get that wave, us elders deserve some waves, hey at least we didn't put in a dirty great marina.
so much respect for Rusty ..πππΌ
The "Old grommet " a real legend and still so passionate for the ocean! Alot of waves in those legs. I still enjoy watching Rusty just trimming !!
