This was one of the biggest days of the year a few months ago. Uluwatu’s Outside Corner had some bombs, but the lineup looked really unpredictable.
There would be no major waves for extended periods, and then a big wide set could suddenly show up – catching out anyone that may have been chasing waves on the inside. With a couple more behind the first one, there was nothing to do for these three surfers but cop the whole set on the head.

Red board could have made it with more sense of urgency haha guess they donโt give you a cardio test with your passport
…and that's why it's called being in a washing machine, that's scary and exhausting!
Comes under the header of shit happens, over and over and over and overโฆ๐
Getting caught inside is what separates the men from the boys. Itโs unavoidable. We all try like hell to avoid it but itโs going to happen. You can either handle it or not. Itโs hard to relax when your about to get slammed but thatโs exactly what has to happen. Iโve learned to try to get as deep as possible and focus on grabbing my leash at my ankle. Iโm just a little piece of seaweed… now., which way was up again?
Here in Hawaii you have to learn fast.
All three shared some words on that paddle back into the lineup
They don't make surfers like they used to. Nancies.
Thatโs what you get for riding 7ft guns have fun duck diving them
I surfed Blacks back in 75 during the biggest swell Iโd ever seen. Got caught inside scratching for Thirty foot face coming at me. I almost made it then got sucked backwards over the falls. Almost didnโt make it. The washing machine is where you find out if youโre going to live or die.
This is my nightmare of nightmares
Getting stuck on the inside at the beginning of the set right in the impact zone. Taking a beating getting ragdolled back after each ditched dive. All the while your lungs are chugging for air at any chance you get between beatings.. is all worth it when you drop in, pull in side and get barreled like MF!
Well โฆ. That Sucks
Pretty much sums it up for me lately…. lol
For these waves, jetski support must be mandatory
"But it said 1-2 feet on the forecast"
Been there when I first started. Lived to tell the story, and laugh about it, but wouldnโt dare get caught on the inside like that now. Might not make it out.๐ฌ
Im not a surfer so sorry if this is a stupid question but wouldnt it be possible and a good idea to carry a wrist mounted mini O2 cylinder and mouthpiece. Im sure they exist. Only give a couple of mins of air but in the worst case senario thats proball thats needed. Just a thought from a non surfer watching this knowing heโd have drowned ๐
Yep . Usually happens just before you get out the back , we use to call it clean up set !
And then came the clean up sets after….๐ค
They stayed close to keep an eye out for each other in case one didn't pop back up or whatever else could happen
the worst is when you take the first and smallest in the series, look behind you and see waves 3x bigger than yours coming crashing down just where you end up
Looks like PIPELINE… paddling out busting big at first reef…
Oh yeah grew up surfing Hawaii this was automatic ๐๐
Two times in a row! That must be breath taking.
That surf is relentless!!!They never made it to the break!!!
A different meaning of spin cycle! These dudes are getting pounded!
in the wise words of my old man: if ever in doubt, go as deep as you can
Murphy's law, all that effort and when you are about to reach the spot, you get washed out back again, well, try tomorrow because today you know you are almost in a black out
Shoulda sat out the back suckers!
Impact zone baby. Two of those guys got pushed back in so far they ended up seated back in their car.
why not just ride the wash in a ways to de-ass yourself from the area of impact
Seems like the story of my life atm
Uluwatu is gold.
If you ever want to experience total exhaustion, try this! I've run marathons where I injured myself and still managed to finish, white as a ghost from the pain, that were less scary and in some ways exhausting than being worked by a dozen ten foot waves in a row. I've never been water boarded but the experience must be similar.
Them pesky waves are too dang big.
Piff ! ๐๐คธ
Why would you try to paddle out during a set? It's all about timing. Especially if your duck-diving skills are weak.
Yikes
what people really mean when they say "Only a surfer knows the feeling!" lol
You can see that point of "fuck, guess this is my life now"
Maybe try to duck dive?
Thatโs when you paddle in and start over ๐
Nah, they just decided to head down to Padang Padang.
That's a horrible feeling
Love the guy who threw his arms in the air as if to sayโฆ.you serious!!? Wtf?
๐คฃ
Ha ha
In the first part of the video there was a guy safe on the shoulder… and then he wasn't! Smoked!
Ugh. That "getting worked" feeling. So frustrating. Makes getting outside all the sweeter. Looking around at your buddies with a big grin on your face.
uluwak!
how can one LIke or Dislike a surf wave….. ? It just IS.
