The Rip Curl Pro makes its appearance as the third event on the World Surf League schedule at Bells Beach, Victoria in Australia. The 2017 event will run from April 12 through April 24.
Australian Matt Wilkinson took home the win in this event last season, getting his first-ever Bells Trophy as he defeated Jordy Smith in the final.
The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is the longest-running surf contest in existence. It began in 1961 as the Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival. and it has had some classic moments, including in 1981 when the competition had 15-foot monster waves..
The high cliffs at Bells Beach provide quite a background for this event, forming an amphitheater effect around the beaches of Victoria and Winkipop Beach.
The world’s longest running pro surfing event has evolved into an event that both the competitors and fans say is one of the best on tour.
Bells Beach is comprised of several breaks: The Bowl, Outside Bells, Rincon, Centreside, Southside and Winkipop are the most well known.
The Bowl is the steep final section of the wave while Outside Bells is the main break that produces a long, fast wall.
Winkipop runs over a reef that produces a quick hollow wave.
