The back half of January was non-stop for pumping Portugal. Back-to-back North Atlantic bangers buzzed out of the North Atlantic, into the shores of Europe’s surf gold mine. Days of great waves from Nazare, Ericeira, Peniche, all the way down to the Algarve and everywhere in between.

That consistent barrage of swell sniper shots worked wonders. But it was the country’s slabs that made for the x-factor. Those same slabs that Von Rupp grew up cutting his teeth, before moving over to the more big wave hell cat route.

“We’ve not seen the slabs like this in a long time,” said Miguel Blanco, who is always on it when home comes good. “I was planning on going to Hawaii, but I didn’t in the end because it felt right being here and getting drained. I wish every year was like this.”
