Back in the 50s and 60s, a weekend family outing might be to Sand Mountain, near Ft Meade, FL. It was a 200' tall pile of tailings left from phosphate mining over the previous 50 years, that people (mostly teenagers) would slide down on a piece of cardboard. In the 70s, the efficiency of phosphate mining made it profitable to re-process the entire mountain to extract the small percentage of phosphate that was still in it. The subsequent tailings were used to fill in other strip-mining areas, to bring them nearly back to their pre-mined condition.
