frutiger aero was such a bright, optimistic and positive kind of futurism. it was genuinely excited for the information age and envisioned a utopian future where technology was in balance with nature. the New Millennium was a fresh start and the dawn of a new age. now look at how our style of futurism has completely changed to be more uniform, featureless, lacking in colour and natural textures, or really features of any kind- it reminds me of the cold, alien aura of brutalism, taken to the extreme by also sucking all of the familiar textures and shapes out of it, even removing its' signature hostility for a passive, impersonal disinterest. brutalism looms over you and shouts at you. current design says… nothing. it doesn't want to talk to you. everything looks like softly glowing white and black cubes now. our design does not say much other than "hive mind" and "we are out of ideas right now". if you listen to the general vibe of people's chatter you know that people are not so excited for the future at the moment, it feels very uncertain and a lot of people are very worried. our eras of art and design very much reflect our culture and futurism always gives us a really special insight into how we are feeling about ourselves and our place in the world.
