He certainly could have faked his death. However, I don't understand why he'd even call the control tower. The operator says the young man sounded distraught. Also, he never used the word "UFO." The last thing you can hear on the recording sounds like metallic scraping. Never screamed or declared "May Day."

Well this is all very smug and comical, but the guy saw SOMETHING up there. Something physical.
Fredrick was taken out by a helicopter. Although helicopters were present in his time, the one he saw was an experimental and it's actions caused his engine troubles and ultimately the graveyard spin. He was also doing illegal activity and that's why he didn't tell people what he was doing.
Or…
Fred encounted a UFO as described and it affected his plane as per the strange interference with transmission recorded and it ditched into the ocean or.. Dissappeared as per the evidence to never being seen or found.
