Rodrigo Koxa can now say he has ridden the biggest wave ever surfed. The Brazilian rode a 24.4-metre monster at Nazaré in Portugal on 8 November but it wasn’t until Saturday that it was recognised at the World Surf League’s Big Wave awards in California

Maybe biggest wave ever towed into but NOT the biggest wave ever surfed. Surfing a wave means you paddled into it with your own power. A million times harder. Not even the same sport.

As crazy as this looks this video doesn't do it nearly enough justice. The biggest I have been out in (not surfed, I was petrified) was 10-12 FOOT and you feel as if the wave could kill you. 24.4 metres, my god.
Awesome – but title should be biggest wave ever tow-surfed. Pulled by a jetski like a wakeboarder into a wave while attached to a board with footstraps is tow surfing which is very different than big wave surfing. Amazing footage but I think the guys that paddle under their own power into Jaws or Mavericks without a jetski are accomplishing a much more complicated feat.

Amazing as it is, I think this record might be short-lived. It took them a long time to get this ride sorted out which is why he only got the official record now. But in the meantime, there were a lot of huge waves in January and February this year that look to be a similar or even greater size, by Steudtner, McNamara, Gabeira and that terrifyingly gigantic one by Vau. I don't know if there's any clear enough footage to get a proper measurement on that last one, and the ride might not be eligible because he went right and noped out halfway across the wave (probably saved his life), but judging by the footage and eye witness reports that one might have actually been 10 meters (!) taller than this one, can you imagine that? Nazaré man
