For all the amazing rides you see at big Uluwatu, there’s countless more of struggles and challenges that happen between those magical moments of actually riding a wave.
Here’s a great example, of how quickly a surfer can get washed in, almost to the beach. From that point it’s a long paddle back out to where he began. He’ll have to deal with a river like current and more sets on the head before making it back to the lineup.
This was filmed during peak swell season a few months ago. You can see the rest of this session here: https://youtu.be/Uv5c1cTE1_Y

It's all exhaustion and frustration until your leggie breaks. Then it's fear.
Love this type of videos. Please keep making more. This video shows the power and strengh of mother nature
What sucks is when you're caught inside and you have no idea how many waves are in the punishment set!
so scary
What a zen moment when you are in the white water as all things shall pass…until you end up on the rocks…then F@&$!!!
It’s peeling but it’s not. Tow day?
Clean up on isle 9…….
you gotta hope there's a decent lull between those 10 wave sets.
Won't be long before a jetski charter service is established at Ulu's for the big days? Pay $50-$100 for 10 rides out to the lineup in 1 minute without getting your hair wet?
mad props to the guy @1:10
Never a fun place to be.
Don't panic, stay calm……………………know your limits!
At least the water is warm there in Bali. . . . there are worse scenarios where this occurs & the difference is that you're head to toe in a rubber suit while being pounded by sub 55° dark water & desperately trying to find a channel to see if you can get back out just to do it again.
The moral to the story.
Is make sure you make the drop and out to the open face
Or it's
MANY ON THE HEAD..
thanks for this, i appreciate the reality being shown as well as the rides
thats pretty sizey
8 wave set getting Worked. Gnarly!
That's gettin' caught inside!
This reminds me of surfing HB at head high plus and then getting caught inside from a bomb set and having to bail my board. I would pull my leash leg into my chest and wait for the wave to seriously yank my board and then release my leg a little bit. My way of trying to keep my leash from snapping lol. Never enjoyed a 500 yard swim in to chase my stick…. nice post sir
No fun, been there more than I want to admit….go back out try it again, lol
nice waves, unfortunately, less experienced board riders just get smashed, but have fun.
Finally bought my surfboard !!!!!
Dang, definitely don't think I've ever had a paddle battle like that, even Puerto Escondido has some lulls.
I see three fools who shouldn't be out there 😅
Showing true depiction on how it can be out there, great footage
Omg really??? Why they dont paddle to the left en get out from the white water or impact zone??
Been there, done that. Not fun.
It was only a 3ft swell on my only trip to Bali, but I've surfed Makaha when it was 15-20' and got caught inside twice….that's what this video reminded me of. Shit gets serious really quick….
Getting dragged across that reef is no joke on a small day, having 20ft+ bombs sucking it dry then landing on your head deserves some mad respect
Wow was that a two wave hold down right at the beginning??
That was a test of will and strength. How long can you hold your breath becomes a question. It's like paddling on a treadmill.
I feel bad watching this because everytime I ask my friend to come out surfing he's like it's not too big today right and I say nope and then this happens where I'm out the back trying to shout encouragement while he gets washed and worked 🥲🥲🥲
When Ur the dude out back by urself an others r getting closer to God…😵 Ur ability to take off with skills lessons…!?! Power of the mind ? 🙏💪✌️🇦🇺
You can hear the sucking sound. The arms becoming rubber, The realization you're a half a mile from where you paddled out, and that's just the first five waves! lol
Gettin' worked!
They had to wait the set out to get back out.
where I'm from we have a saying-
"sometimes you eat the bear,
sometimes the bear eats you."
Temerity, not to be confused with courage.
Im headed to the beach to find that channel!
Yikes What a nightmare..
In the twilight zonnnnnnnne
