Does Tasmania have nice beaches?

West Beach has a proud tradition of Surf Life Saving Clubs and championships, and the modern Surf Club building also boasts a beachfront restaurant and café.

With Callum & Murray the sea creatures aquatic feature, BBQs picnic shelters, open grassed space, and a children’s playground, this is a popular place for the people of both Burnie and north-west Tasmania.

On Saturday mornings Burnie Parkrun starts and finishes at the Burnie Waterfront formally known as Hilder Parade.

In front of the Surf Life Saving Club are beach volleyball nets, where the Burnie Volleyball Association holds competitive games during the summer months. Also available near the surfclub are halfcourt basketball, public toilets, outdoor showers, change rooms, and outdoor exercise equipment. Plus a beach wheelchair is available for use with a key.

You’ll find some of the most beautiful beaches in north-West and North-East Tasmania around Anderson Bay, with white sands and sheltered bays, rockpools and sand dunes. Here you can dine al fresco on locally caught scallops and lobster, or simply walk the coastline, dotted with wildflowers and offering sweeping sea views.

The beach is composed of medium sand, which combines with the usually low waves to produce a moderately steep narrow high tide beach, which widens up to 100 m at low tide. West Beach is relatively safe under normal low wave conditions, with best swimming at mid to high tide.
