Catching a metre-plus mulloway from the beach is the pinnacle of surf fishing for many – and this trip proves just how much persistence it can take to get there.
Over two evenings on the sand, Lee sets out to chase the elusive silver ghost, timing his sessions around tide changes and last light when big mulloway are most likely to feed. The first night delivers a couple of solid fish in the 75–80cm range, proving the approach is working – but the real goal is still out there.
On night two, the plan evolves. Bigger baits come into play, including live yakkas rigged using a slide baiting technique, along with fresh squid and butterflied fish baits. Conditions aren’t quite as favourable, and the bycatch keeps things interesting, but the focus remains on fishing the new tide and staying patient when the bite slows.
As darkness settles and the tide begins to push again, everything finally comes together.
What follows is the moment every beach angler hopes for – a powerful run, heavy head shakes and the unmistakable flash of silver in the surf. After two nights of effort, Lee lands a massive mulloway measuring 110cm, ticking off one of the biggest milestones in surf fishing.

One way to not get tangles on a slide bait is to just use a large clip swivel.

Aah th +1 mtre mulloway chase, it had me frustrated for years. Lost a couple that might have been, caught small ones, but that feeling when 20 years of frustration is released as one is a great feeling. I'm still smiling 3 years later
