The Surf Showdown, who’s winning the Crowd Wars? Malibu or Doheny?
While both are insanely crowded, the mindset is completely different. Different surfers, different attitudes. Do you agree?
Thanks for watching. I’m Brad Jacobson and I’ll sea you on the sand.

there is a great video, I think procter surfboards, that shows a guy on a shortboard catching up to, and passing multiple surfers that drop in way in front of him at various sections of the wave…
you look like you are about the same age as me… how do you not get so demoralized by the crowd factor that you just stop surfing?
the amount of people surfing in such small area reminded me of one of those "Super Crowded Man Made Wave Swim Pools" in China during hot summer days. People mountain People Sea . Really miss Malibu back in the 80's.
Doheny more mellower. Way the wave set up multiple take off spots less aggro despite crowds
Doheny is fun and not a bunch of aggro “old men rule” dudes dropping in every other wave 😊
Laugh if you have to, but I started surfn Lake Michigan and I've had days where I was the only one in the water. But those waves sure look dreamy.
Why standard surfing rules do not apply there ?
Malibu when it’s on is the one of the best breaks in Cali, forget all the yada yada BS next time the BU is firing all 3 points connecting get out there and self reflect.
Sounds like a Tourist info clip, you can’t charge the BU don’t bother go elsewhere not a beginners break.
While I agree that Malibu is generally a stronger wave and Doheney a softer one, it is less steadfast rule for Doho sense it is not a pure point break like Malibu. Both are rather consistent Southern facing break so they usually pick up the same swell. Doho has three main breaks just like Malibu but they’ll never connect into one long ride like Malibu can do, each break generally starts out on a bit of, to very much so a slab of reef, and then as the wave pushes in it’ll connect to softer inside point and beach breaks But some of the best Longboarders in the world will also be seen at Doho often enough especially at the Bone Yard out set of reefs. So I t would be very inaccurate to paint it as a purely beginner wave! Yes, inside the “Bone Yard” is purely for beginner (the best in the continental US probably) but the outside spots are a grouping of modest to rather significant reefs that make for a fantastically consistent take off and at times it can be just nasty in a way that a point break just can’t do. Addition the outer Doho reef will sustain the biggest waves you’ll see on the SoCal Coast. Doho can get HUGE at time but it’ll never be as holow or as long a ride as Malibu nor as frequent. The other factor for Doho is that San O, Churches and Trestles are just another 15 minutes down the road which Malibu does not have any analog sibling so close like that so there is less pressure to pick that spot or not surf at all.
Dude, it’s apples and oranges. And you forgot to add Cowell’s Cove and Capitola Jetty in Santa Cruz to the mix! 😂😂
Doheny on a decent south swell is a different animal. This vid has some of the smallest weakest doho waves I’ve seen. Crowd thins dramatically and there is greater awareness / etiquette when’s its chest+. Surfed there during Hurricane Marie years ago and WOW what a blast.
Surf horror film plot: RAND Corporation scientist bullied by Malibu locals discovers traces of Miki Dora's DNA on an antique credit card, and uses it to clone an army of Dorabots: ultra-hot, ultra-mean, and hellbent on ballistically launching each and every human out of the Malibu lineup. Especially Joel Tudor (who appears uncredited in a brief but fatal cameo).
No performance minded surfer would spend a minute at dohini. Just look at the barney infestation and going straight, lowers your surfing skills.
Americans barbecue surf tail..
Doheny takes it easily. Saw it on Saturday morning a week ago, easily 10+ people per wave. Absolutely unsurfable
"……GLAMOUROUS BEACH LIFESTYLE…."??? LMFAO
This is worse than Everest now everybody wants to go surfing and now this sport is ruined. This is why the globalists and Satanists want all the useless eaters dead like in Lahaina Town. They want it all for themselves. Now looking at this mess well, it's like going to the Grand Canyon and trying to get a photo without someone in it. Too many people doing the same thing is bad for whatever you are doing and that's the sad truth. We're in the world but not of it says the Lord. Jesus doesn't care about your selfie or if we summit Everest or finished the Iron Man Triathlon. The road is narrow which leads to Heaven and the broad road everyone is taking leads to destruction or in this case a bad time at least.
NEWS FLASH
surfing is for kooks
Ive been surfing Malibu off/on since the 70s and when the swell is breaking right you can ride for a long time, maybe a minute. Unfortunately on that day there will be 60 guys in the water, its not surfing, its survival, weaving around everyone, trying not to get run over. I have resorted to surfing at night sometimes to avoid the crowds. Its safer in the dark than in the crowds. IMHO
Mali-Boo-Boo & Doh-Teeny, this video is the only attention I give them.
Socal is just overcrowded in a nutshell. So many kooks wearing their ugly hats looking like they just bought their stuff on Amazon.
Dude at Doho on the orange board is a jerk, snakes me on every wave
Doheny is full of chill, Malibu is full of try-hards.
Coming from a beach break where I usually find my own peak… this actually looks like a lot of fun surfing party waves all day, sure you can’t do much carving but it looks fun enjoying a wave with people next to you.

A good beginner comparison would be Doheny and Mondos? Also wouldn’t mind seeing one on etiquette at Rincon over Malibu. Love the vids. Definitely nailed the the comparisons here. 🤙
The humanity. No thank you.
Back in the early 60s I surfed Doheny with less than 10 guys in the water, and five were with me.
Looks like the Waikiki vibe, you gotta enter knowing that someone will cut you off, 😂
Two diff kinds of surfing purgatory lol
Brad I love your content but I don’t know how to describe your narrator voice without hurting your feelings
It's pretty true, if you don't drop in at either spot you're not going to get a wave. You just have ignore the crybabies.
Trestles, Rincon and pretty much all the decent spots are crowded today so I guess Ecuador and El Salvador is a break from SoCal
Circus FREAK SHOW lol and it's FREE!!
All comparisons and analogies are on point, but I've gotta' say, having surfed both on midweek morning glass, Doheny still has respect for etiquette. Wish I could say the same for 'bu.
Another thing that both of these spots have in common- polluted water. Both have consistently been on the "beach bummer" list of high bacteria counts.
And both beaches are known for barrels filled with dead guys… oh? Really? Just Malibu???
I went to doheny last week for first time in years, I also learned there, was very crowded with LOTS of kids and families surfing. Malibu is the opposite with more adults and hardly any youngsters. Both have beginner and experienced surfers, but I’ve noticed malibu has more very advanced.
Fun piece 🙂 Very nicely done.

It’s Doheny for me, though I actually started w/lessons 20 yrs ago in HB and MB. The comparison to a community pool at the height of summer is an apt one. You can catch the ‘Bu 1st Point fights live almost anytime on the Surfline webcam, though it doesn’t look too too bad as of an hour ago. Are early mornings or evenings best, fall/winter better than summer, or are these spots always crowded now?
The inside break (or after the peak) at lowers is the best place to learn.
Unhealthy bacteria levels at first point today and it’s still crowded AF. Everyone ignoring the advisory and risking it 🤢
Fun comparison! I learned to surf at Doheny. San Onofre is another one of those stay all day slow rolling surf spots in so Cal. BTW – What happened to the audio on this upload? It's all over the place.
I feel like going early am works tho
